Domain Appraisals - Who Is Best?

I had an idea what my domain name was worth, but wasn't sure, so I decided to have it appraised. For the most accurate results, I chose 3 different appraisal services.

The first appraisal service I chose was a free appraisal from members of a popular domain name discussion forum. One person appraised it's value as the cost of registration, or about $8. The rest weren't much better. You will see how funny that is at the last part of this article. Not recommended.

For the second appraisal I used GoDaddy's Express Appraisal at $4.99. I believe this is an automated service - that is, a computer, not a human appraises the domain based on a set of keywords and other criteria.
The GoDaddy express appraisal valued the domain at $90 - $237. Better than the last appraisal, but still much less than what I felt the domain was worth.

The last appraisal I received was from Afternic.com. For $24.95 Afternic uses a scoring system that analyzes attributes of the domain name such as length, characters, search term popularity, and other attributes to determine domain value. I don't know if there is human input or not.

Afternic appraised the domain at $2400 which was very close to my original asking price of $2500. In July 2009 I sold the domain name for $2250.

Of all the appraisal services I've used, including a few not mentioned above, Afternic's appraisals most closely match what I felt the domain name was worth. Had I used any of the other appraisals from the other services, I could have lost thousands of dollars in profit.
